Vanessa Howard Anderson
Vanessa’s professional journey includes decades of equine experience, higher education, corporate work and a constant focus on personal development.
As a young rider, Vanessa’s journey was profoundly influenced by her early trainers Morgan Thomas and the (late)John Baumann whom she trained with at Parkside Stables. Vanessa started her show jumping career in the early 1980’s at the age of eight in the Pony Hunter ring and graduated progressively through the ranks to the Junior Hunter and Jumper Divisions. Qualifying for the AHSA/USEF Finals back East multiple times, the ASPCA/Maclay West Coast Finals, as well as winning the CET Medal, during her years as a Junior rider. Vanessa showed and won many top Championships at prestigious horse show venues including Spruce Meadows, Thunderbird, Indio/Thermal, Southern Pines, and many more. Vanessa’s championship awards are both numerous and in recognition of her dedication to the sport.
Vanessa has had the opportunity to ride and attend clinics with many wonderful coaches and clinicians in the industry. These include; Morgan Thomas, Jill Pierce, Desiree Johnson, Brent & Laura Balisky, Claudia Cojocar, George Morris, Leslie Burr, Jack Towel, Jimmy Cantwell (late) and many more.
Vanessa attended Goucher College in Baltimore Maryland, where she earned her Double Major in Psychology and Sociology Graduating (Cum Laude). Vanessa competed on Goucher College’s IHSA Equestrian Team all 4 years of school in the Open Jumping and Open Flat Divisions winning numerous Blue ribbons for the team. Vanessa also participated in the ANRC National Championships each year. This is an exemplary event where Vanessa would work with a specific horse for many months leading up to the competition in the Spring. They would compete in 3 Riding Phases: Flat Phase (USEF Equitation phase), Hunt Seat Medal Phase (Over An Equitation Course), An Equitation Derby (Set Over A Cross Country Course). There would be a 4th phase (consisting of a Written Test). Vanessa chose to remain on the East Coast throughout the Summers to train and work with the horses. This included working closely with Jimmy Cantwell at his private family farm in Virginia to deepen her equestrian knowledge. This is the period of time that shaped her passion for the horse and the importance for horsemanship.
After graduating from Goucher in 2000, Vanessa joined AdRelevance, a national advertising agency headquartered in Seattle WA. As an Account Manager she was responsible for East Coast Sales. Vanessa quickly demonstrated her ability to meet and beat goals while remaining focused on customer experience. AdRelevance was purchased by Nielson as part of the industry’s consolidation. Vanessa successfully transitioned through this merger/acquisition and provided Nielson with the support and numbers it needed to create a success story. Vanessa’s entrepreneurial spirit emerged during this same timeframe. She she started her horse training business on a part time basis and soon discovered her true passion for the horses and business. With the support of her family and soon to be husband, Vanessa decided to leave the cooperate world and start her own horse training business.
VLH Training LLC was formed in 2001 and was the beginning of her professional training career operating at her family’s equestrian facility in Redmond Washington. Vanessa created one of the best Hunter/Jumper training programs in the Northwest by combining horsemanship, riding skills, and personal growth. Vanessa had the opportunity to take multiple young horses from the Baby Green Hunters to the 2nd Year Green Working Hunters winning numerous Championships along the way. On many occasions she was given horses that had never jumped or needed extensive retraining and turned them into successful show jumping horses on the A Circuit for her customers. Vanessa had the opportunity to ride Opus One to the 6 Year Old Young Jumper Year End Zone 9 Championships.
Vanessa has spent 12 plus years attending the clinics of Buck Brannaman and applying his techniques to all phases of developing the horse and rider. This culminated in the rescue of two horses that were left for dead and subsequently 100% rehabilitated.
Ultimately our future is shaped by the challenges we face over time. Vanessa made the decision to pursue her advanced degrees in Clinical Psychology after the birth of her second daughter. She was accepted into Antioch University Graduate Program in Clinical Psychology with a specific focus on Neurodiversity. Vanessa began her graduate studies with an emphasis on Autism Spectrum Disorder, a direction that would prove prescient over the next several years. Vanessa became extremely ill throughout her studies and decided a move to Southern California would be the best for her path to healing. It was this change in environment that led her to discover her passion for Holistic and Spiritual Psychology and to begin her own healing. Quite literally, BeOne Training & Wellness was formed from these experiences and the knowledge that Vanessa could help others in the same manner.
Vanessa and her husband Zach and their two daughters Skylar and Madison have purchased and moved to their own private equestrian farm in the Gig Harbor WA area where they can continue to grow and provide the lifestyle and care for their personal horses and future clients. While their oldest daughter is an accomplished rider, she has decided to put her focus on Volleyball. Their youngest daughter Madison is a 3rd generation equestrian carrying on the Howard-Anderson Legacy of “BeOne” Horse Focused Horsemanship. She is a fierce competitor as well!!
Vanessa has been incorporating Spirituality and Mental preparedness for both horse and rider long before it became fashionable. She believes that humans must keep our focus on the mind, body and soul of their horse. If the horse is content and relaxed in its’ mind, the rider will ultimately connect to the body and feet of the horse. At BeOne Training & Wellness the Horse and its well-being comes first. The relationship between horse and rider is the next most important part. Vanessa strives to create an environment and training program where the horse will not only feel content but in turn thrive. Both horse and rider will see positive results whether they are looking to show, pleasure ride or live out their lives together in retirement.
Vanessa and BeOne Training can help you achieve your goals, both for you and your horse. You will become a better rider and partner with your horse.
